New Bedford Local Cultural Council awards $1,600 to FHR New Bedford
New Bedford, MA – April 16, 2012 – Studio 35 at Fellowship Health Resources, Inc. (FHR) in New Bedford has plans to expand thanks to a grant from the New Bedford Cultural Council. The $1,600 that was awarded to FHR will be used to fund this creative recovery program.
“We’re thrilled to have the support of the New Bedford Local Cultural Council,” says FHR President/CEO Joe Dziobek. “We have a lot of talented artists and staff, and this money will allow FHR to continue providing an outlet for participants to express themselves individually and within the community.”
Funds will not only support music and art therapy classes, but will provide future opportunities for persons served to display their creative works and talent in the community. “Studio 35 will perform at AHA! Night, an arts and cultural event in the New Bedford community,” says Regional Director Kim Mello. “This musical and artistic performance will also raise awareness of the creative arts in mental health and substance abuse recovery.”
A portion of the funds received from the grant will be used to purchase frames for the artwork to be displayed at AHA! Night on May 10. “Beyond the prep work for AHA! Night, we’ve been thinking about offering a Zentangle class for persons served in May,” says Rehabilitation and Recovery Group Coordinator Jen Lima. “We’d also like to offer outdoor painting classes in the warmer weather. Materials such as three to four portable easels and stools will need to be purchased with the grant money to make these classes possible.”
The remainder of funding from the New Bedford Cultural Council will support an art display for Mental Health America’s “May is Mental Health Month.” Studio 35 artists will have their work on display at New Bedford’s Department of Mental Health. Lima says that frames will need to be purchased once again to prepare for this exhibit.
FHR will allocate any remaining funds to use for Studio 35 workshops until February 2013. For more information about Studio 35 in New Bedford, please contact Kim Mello at 508-789-6232.
