On Saturday, May 4, 2019, FHR (Fellowship Health Resources, Inc.) hosted its 2nd Annual ‘A Walk In My Shoes’ event. Held at Fort Taber Park, the walk/run raised $7,500 to support individuals in FHR’s care through the organization’s Community Peer Connections Program.
Taking place during National Mental Health Awareness Month, the fundraiser was also an opportunity to increase understanding, educate the public, and show support for the many people impacted by mental illness who are working to improve their lives.
The 4.6-mile event stretched along the scenic Harbor Walk, kicking off with a greeting from FHR Director of Peer Recovery Services, Northeast, Robert Ortiz.
“It takes one person to believe in someone and create change,” said Ortiz. “I would ask the community to recognize that and know that their efforts can really help someone overcome their life challenges.”
Jennifer Blatchford also spoke, sharing moving words about how she has personally witnessed how FHR’s programs have fostered hope and recovery.
“Thankfully, because of programs such as Fellowship Health Resources, my mom was able to not only continue to be somewhat independent, but have a better quality of life,” she explained. “I want you all to know that you matter and that there is hope.”
FHR’s Community Peer Connections is a peer-driven volunteer program that matches a volunteer with an individual from the community seeking support and companionship. Volunteers spend at least one hour a week with their ‘match’ pursuing activities they both enjoy, in a relationship of mutuality, connection, collaboration, socialization, and support.
“We were able to almost double the number of participants of our walk this year,” Ortiz added. “I’d like to thank all of FHR’s dedicated staff, our community members and friends, and sponsors for making this event possible and such a success.”
