Members of FHR’s Drop in Center in Raleigh, North Carolina, have teamed up to enhance their efforts in learning how to read and write. Working with staff and FHR’s two PSR programs, the first Spelling Bee Tournament was coordinated.
Each week, a study list was created for members. At the end of the three week period, the top four spellers from each program competed in the championship to earn the title of best speller.
“For over an hour, the contestants spelled their hearts out,” explained Dana Barnes, FHR Drop In Center Program Director. “The spectators were also encouraged to spell along from their seats.”
After the spelling bee had concluded and a winner was named, members were eager to plan the next event, and continue practicing their spelling skills.
